How to Care for Opal Jewellery

In short: opal is softer than most gemstones (about 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, against 10 for diamond), so it scratches more easily and dislikes hard knocks — but cared for sensibly it lasts generations. Clean a solid opal with mild soapy water and a soft cloth; never soak a doublet or triplet; keep all opal away from ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes.
Is opal durable enough to wear every day?
Yes, with a little care. Pendants and earrings take few knocks and suit everyday wear. Rings take the most — for a ring you will wear daily, a protective setting (such as a bezel, which wraps the stone's edge) is the safer choice. Take rings off for the gym, gardening, cleaning and heavy work.
How do I clean a solid opal?
Warm water with a drop of mild soap, a soft cloth or very soft brush, rinse and pat dry.
How do I clean a doublet or triplet?
Wipe it with a damp, soft cloth only. Never soak or submerge it — water can work into the bonding layer over time and leave the stone cloudy or grey.
What should I avoid?
- Ultrasonic and steam cleaners (all opal).
- Household chemicals, chlorine (pools, spas) and cosmetics on the stone.
- Sudden temperature changes — don't go from a hot car into icy water.
- Storing opal loose with other jewellery: harder gems and metal will scratch it.
How should I store opal jewellery?
On its own, in a soft pouch or a lined compartment of a jewellery box.
My opal is scratched or dull — can it be fixed?
A solid opal can usually be re-polished by a jeweller to restore its shine. Bring it in and we will look at it.
How often should the setting be checked?
Once a year. Claws and bezels wear with use; a quick check keeps the stone secure.
What about gold-plated pieces?
Gold plating is a surface finish: it wears with use and can be re-plated. Wipe plated pieces gently and keep them away from perfume and chlorine.
