Solid, Doublet & Triplet Opal — What's the Difference?
In short: a solid opal is one whole natural stone; a doublet is a thin slice of natural opal bonded to a dark backing; a triplet is that same slice finished with a clear protective cap on top. All three are genuine Australian opal — the difference is how the stone is built, which affects price and care, not whether it's real.
The quick answer
- Solid opal — one natural stone, all the way through. The finest and most valuable, and the most hard-wearing. No special water care.
- Doublet — a genuine slice of opal on a dark backing that deepens the colour. Real opal, more affordable; keep it away from prolonged water.
- Triplet — a genuine slice of opal, backed and capped with a clear dome that magnifies and protects the colour. The most affordable form; keep it away from prolonged water.
What is a solid opal?
A solid opal is a single, natural opal stone — nothing added. It's the purest form, the most valuable, and the most durable, and it can be worn in water without worry. Solid black opal from Lightning Ridge is the rarest and most prized of all. If you're after an heirloom or an investment piece, choose solid. Browse solid & all opal rings →
What is a doublet opal?
A doublet is genuine natural opal — a thin slice of real opal bonded to a dark backing (usually ironstone or black potch). The dark layer sits behind the opal and makes its play-of-colour read brighter and bolder. Because it uses a thinner slice of the rough stone, a doublet costs less than a solid of similar size — a real, affordable way into Australian opal. It is not synthetic, lab-made or imitation. What is a triplet opal?
A triplet is three layers: a dark backing, a thin slice of genuine natural opal in the middle, and a clear quartz or glass cap on top. The cap magnifies the colour and shields the opal, and because it uses the least opal of the three forms, a triplet is the most affordable. Again — the opal itself is real Australian opal, not synthetic. Triplet rings · pendants · earrings.
Are doublets and triplets “real” opal?
Yes. The opal in a doublet or triplet is genuine, natural Australian opal — the same material as a solid, just used as a thinner slice with a backing (and, for a triplet, a protective cap). What they are not is synthetic or imitation “opal”, which is man-made and contains no natural opal at all. We only ever sell genuine opal, and we always tell you on every piece whether it's solid, doublet or triplet — so you know exactly what you're buying.
Which should I choose?
- Choose solid for the finest quality, an heirloom or investment piece, or if you want to wear it without thinking about water.
- Choose a doublet or triplet for the same genuine-opal beauty at a friendlier price — ideal for a first opal, a gift, or a bright everyday piece.
Caring for doublets and triplets
Because doublets and triplets are layered, keep them clear of soaking or swimming — prolonged water can, over time, work into the bond. A gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth is all they need. Solid opals don't have this limitation. With any opal ring, it's worth having the setting checked once a year. More on caring for opals →
