Every ring in this collection is set with a genuine, natural Australian opal — cut from stone mined at Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy and the Queensland boulder fields, then handcrafted into a one-of-a-kind piece in our Sydney workshop. Because no two opals share the same play-of-colour, no two rings here are alike. Each comes with our authenticity guarantee and a 12-month workmanship warranty.

Choosing your opal ring

  • Black opal — the rarest and most valuable, with a dark body tone that makes its colour blaze. Mined almost exclusively at Lightning Ridge, NSW. A natural choice for an heirloom or engagement ring.
  • White (light) opal — milky body tone with soft blue-green flashes; a classic, versatile everyday ring.
  • Boulder opal — opal formed in Queensland ironstone; bold, earthy, and completely unique stone to stone.
  • Crystal opal — translucent, with vivid colour glowing right through the stone.
  • Inlay opal — a thin slice of crystal opal shaped to sit flush in the metal over a black backing, which lifts its colour to something spectacular. Because the opal is fine, an inlay piece deserves a little extra care and isn’t made for daily wear.
  • Solid vs composite (doublet & triplet) — a solid is a single natural opal. A composite uses thinner opal to make it more durable and bring out its colour and brightness. A doublet is a layer of genuine opal on a dark host backing such as ironstone (two layers). A triplet is a three-layer “sandwich” — a clear quartz or glass cap on top, opal in the middle, black backing behind — which protects the stone and makes its play-of-colour pop. We always tell you exactly which you’re buying.

Choose from solid 9ct, 14ct or 18ct gold (yellow, rose or white), platinum or sterling silver — or gold-plated silver (yellow or rose) for a more affordable finish, set with diamonds for contrast or with the opal as the star. Want a men’s signet, a particular stone, or a matched set? Our custom design service can make it.

A note on care: solid metals carry our 12-month workmanship warranty. Plating is a surface finish — it naturally wears with use and may need re-plating over time — so it’s covered for 3 months, excluding normal wear and tear. We recommend having settings checked once a year.

Masterpiece Jewellery is a family jeweller on East Circular Quay, beside the Sydney Opera House. Every piece is checked by a qualified gemmologist (FGAA) and valuer, with in-house appraisal on request. Wherever you are in the world, we deliver free. It’s an honour to help you find the ring that tells your story.
